I always tell my doula clients and mama friends that there is one essential tool that is often neglected on baby shower lists, but is one of the best tools for postpartum recovery - a subscription to Netflix! In those first few days (or weeks) that blur together after having a baby, when countless visitors come knocking at the door, and when a newborn's demands are all-consuming, nothing can help a mama settle in for some much needed rest like a good movie. Newborn babies just need to nurse and mamas need to rest, relax and recover. Settle in for some skin-to-skin snuggle time, and check out a few flicks on this list. Can we ever have too many movies that capture the stories of women? I love to find new films that dive deep into the complexities of women's roles and relationships. I can't be the only one... I polled my friends and family for great movies that have a central theme of motherhood, and the responses poured in. This list runs the gamut from the hilariously absurd (Father of the Bride 2, Baby Mama) to the dark and gritty (Precious, Firelight) to heartening and hopeful (Where the Heart Is, Steel Magnolias). There is truly something for everyone here! When you click on each picture, a hyperlink will take you to the Oline movie database and tell you exactly where you can watch each movie (Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, etc.... genius!) And just to get the ball rolling, a movie list like this just wouldn't be complete without a little clip from the otherwise unforgettable rom-com flick "The Back Up Plan". Because who wouldn't want Melissa McCarthy as their Doula?! Here are my top picks for new mamas! Stay Tuned for my next blog entry, a list of the very best Netflix Binge-worthy television series!!
